Lucias Septimus Severus was born in Leptis Magna, modern day Libya, and rose through the ranks to office to become the first African-born emperor of Rome from 193AD. Famous for advancing the Eastern Frontier, he waged war against the Parthians, extending the influence of Rome as far as the River Tigris.
